One year later: An update

Last year, we committed to a sustained effort to fight systemic racism.

As a family-founded business dedicated to making the world a better place, we knew we couldn't simply be observers to the injustices happening around us. We had to be active participants in building a more equitable future for all. As promised in our statement last year, we wanted to keep you updated on our progress.

We started looking inwards first to ensure we were doing right by our team. This work led us to:

  • 1. Establish a cross-functional internal team to lead our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

  • 2. Work with a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant. We began by conducting a company-wide assessment, and we had dedicated time for our entire team to develop a shared language to speak about inclusion and antiracism, and identify opportunities to improve our organization. We have also just begun to review our hiring practices to ensure the process is inclusive and equitable so we can improve the racial diversity of our entire team over time.

  • 3. Coordinate an ongoing series of cross-team sessions to give all of our team members:
    • Learning opportunities to open up career paths across all levels of the organization
    • The chance to learn from one another’s unique experiences and perspectives on an ongoing basis
    • A deeper understanding of our mission—making healthy, green living simple and sustainable for all
  • We also looked outwards. Over the last year, we:

    1. 1. Added 9 BIPOC-owned body care, cleaning and wellness brands to our site whose missions are closely aligned with ours. The brands we added are:
      • Anne's Apothecary
      • Beija Flor Naturals
      • blade + bloom
      • Dinobi
      • Golde
      • Play Pits
      • True Moringa
      • Honey Belle
      • Boba&Vespa

    2. 2. Diversified the influencers and content creators we work with. Over the past year, one third of the influencers and content creators we worked with were BIPOC.

    3. 3. Decided to support two local nonprofits serving the needs of BIPOC families in our community. We donated a total of $10,000 to Family Focus and Y.O.U.—and thanks to these nonprofits and our generous partners, we were also able to donate more than 2,700 eco-friendly household items to over 400 families in our local community.

We recognize that this is just a start. We know there is much more work to be done, and we are committed to continuing to make a difference.

Over the next year, in addition to our ongoing internal efforts, we will:

    1. 1. Continue to bring you even more products made by BIPOC-owned companies.

    2. 2. Continue to work with a diverse base of content creators.

    3. 3. Keep supporting Family Focus and Y.O.U. We have pledged to give an additional $10,000 to support families in our communities again this year. We will continue to donate products to these organizations. And, once COVID restrictions in our community allow, we look forward to donating our time as well.

    4. 4. Remain steadfast in our mission to hire more diverse team members and continue to give our entire team opportunities to learn and grow.

As always, we will continue to keep you informed as we make progress.
