10 ways to go green

It's easy to slip into the routine of everyday life, reaching and using things out of habit or convenience. This Earth Day we're asking that you take stock of the plastic baggies, the to-go cups, disposable utensils, plastic water bottles—all the things that come and go in your day—and consider where and when you might be able to lessen the load.

To plant the seed, here are 10 changes that are better for the planet and better for you.

1. Replace disposable zip top bags

Choose reusable bags and containers for your snacks and sandwiches. Having 3-4 bags per kid guarantees you'll always have a clean one on hand. Plus they're more colorful and fun!

2. Try packing a waste-free lunch

The average kid's school lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per year! Send a love-packed lunch that's waste-free using reusable containers that are free of concerning chemicals. Check out our guide to getting started.

3. Think of your plastic wrap like it's the last roll on Earth

4. Carry a reusable water bottle

The average American uses 167 plastic water bottles a year with 70% of them headed straight for the trash. Choose a reusable bottle made from glass or stainless steel.

5. Say "no thanks" to plastic shopping bags

Keep reusable bags on hand in your purse or car to tote items from the grocery or drugstore, home, work or school. Designed in Brooklyn, our favorite bags by BAGGU are incredibly durable, holding the equivalent of 2-3 plastic grocery bags or up to 50 lbs!

6. Do away with disposable paper

Replacing paper napkins and paper towels with reusable cloth versions is an economical choice that helps eliminate waste in the kitchen. For a family of 4 start with 12 organic cloth napkins and 9-10 reusable dish cloths.

7. BYOU: Bring your own utensils

Did you know that every year we throw away enough plastic forks, knives and spoons to circle the equator 300 times? And that's just from this country alone. Bring your own utensils made from sustainable bamboo.

8. Switch to a reusable coffee cup

If you buy just one cup of coffee or tea in a disposable cup every day, you’ll end up creating about 23 lbs of waste in one year. An insulated, leakproof tumbler keeps coffee hot and won't leach any harmful toxins into your morning cup. You can't say that about styrofoam or plastic-lined paper cups. Choose your tumbler.

9. Retool your cleaning kit

Most conventional cleaners leave a little somethin' somethin' behind...and it's not good. Switch to cleaners that are biodegradable and safe for people, pets, waterways and marine life. This Green Cleaning Starter Kit is an easy way to get the basics.
