Mommypotamus Plastic Free Food Storage

"Sometimes real food gets a bum wrap. But it doesn't have to!"
-Heather, a.k.a. The Mommypotamus

When you make the effort to prepare homemade, unprocessed food, it's a real bummer to cover it in plastic wrap when you're putting it away, especially when we know those chemicals can leach into our food.  Trading up from plastic to glass storage containers is pretty straightforward, a no-brainer.  But plastic wrap has a tendency to stick around; it can be a bit clingy (pardon the pun!).  When Heather, the healthy living blogger The Mommypotamus, asked us for solutions to ditch the toxic wrap, we told her, "We've got you covered."  Here are three brilliant alternatives to ditch the plastic wrap forever.

1. Bee's Wrap

Made from organic cotton muslin, beeswax, jojoba oil and tree resin, Bee's Wrap is a completely safe and sustainable food wrap that can be used again and again.  The simple warmth of your hands softens the wax so you can form it directly around food or open containers.  First, mold the wrap to create a seal, and as it cools, the material will stiffen to hold it in place.  The recently launched Sandwich Wrap includes an embossed button and string to securely cover sandwiches, cheese or veggies.  Washes easily in cool water and dish soap.

2. Silicone Stretch-Top Lid

Made from platinum silicone by Lekue, the Stretch Top creates a vacuum seal to preserve food and prolong freshness.  Perfect for wrapping half a piece of fruit, covering a mason jar, or any bowl that needs a cover.  This versatile stretch top doesn't retain flavors or odors and even withstands temperatures to safely travel from freezer to microwave.  Dishwasher-safe.

3. Silicone Suction Lid

Available in 4 practical sizes, the clear Silicone Lid is ideal for covering bowls that are sitting on the counter or being transferred to the fridge. The lid's suction is so airtight that you can actually lift the bowl using the lid's handle!  Although for safety precautions, we advise against it.  This dishwasher safe alternative is also useful as a splatter screen in the microwave or to cover pots on the stove to retain heat while cooking.
